Could Germany deport migrants to Rwanda?
This plan comes as Germany faces pressure to tackle illegal migration after a recent deadly attack by a Syrian national, and the Nationalist AFD party emerged victorious after regional elections.
The plan resembles that which the United Kingdom pursued until the Labour election victory. However, the new German plan would involve sending asylum seekers to Rwanda only for processing, before being accepted as legitimate refugees to be sent to Germany, according to the German ambassador in the UK.
But the new British government warns Germany against the so-called Rwanda plan, calling it a “gimmick” that was not workable.
Similar schemes to outsource asylum applications and housing have been presented by different countries in the EU lately, to deter the wave of migrants entering Europe each year.
