JK Rowling has taken to social media to challenge the police regarding Scotland’s Hate Crime Law. The law, which came into effect in April, aims to criminalize behaviour aimed at stirring up hatred against individuals based on their characteristics. Rowling’s tweets included references to transgender women as men, including convicted prisoners, trans activists, and other public figures. She specifically mentioned Isla Bryson, formerly known as Adam Graham, who was convicted of rape and sent to a women’s jail. Rowling expressed concerns about freedom of speech being restricted if discussing biological sex accurately is deemed criminal. She stated she would welcome arrest upon returning to Scotland, where she resides. Scotland’s First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has highlighted the law as a means to combat a ”rising tide of hatred.”
